Story: Tohru is a very kind girl who is always looking on the bright side of everything. Despite the attitude anyone else shows her, she always shows kindness. She even influenced Kyo and Yuki to tone the constant fighting down. She is usually very deep in thought, and due to this fact, she is very clumsy. In turn for her room at Shigure's house, she cleans the house and makes all their meals for them. And no matter how much Yuki or Kyo get depressed or angry, she never gives up trying to get them to look on the bright side.

Story: Yuki is a mysterious, smart, and athletic bishounen (beautiful boy) that almost everyone likes. Hiding behind a cool exterior, Yuki actually yearns for a normal life without hidden secrets and mysterious curses. Playing the kind, thoughtful prince in school, Yuki even has his own fan club! Yuki may seem confident and fearless, but he has a scarred past that hides in the crevices of his fears. Yuki Sohma is part of the cursed Sohma family, and whenever he embraces a person of the opposite gender, he turns into a rat.

Story: Shigure is the older cousin of Yuki and Kyo. Despite the lecherous way he acts, he can actually be kind and sometimes selfless. He is the one who invited Tohru to live in his house. Shigure is just an all around good and funny guy... that transforms into a dog when hugged by the opposite gender. He is also a novelist, and one of his favorite hobbies is putting his editor through near-torment with his jokes and pranks, which often focus on hiding in some way when a deadline rolls around.

Status: The Cat
Story: Kyo is the outcast of the zodiac. Whenever he embraces a person of the opposite gender, he transforms into a cat. Kyo is really sensitive, so it is easy to get him pissed off. Whenever he loses his temper, he says mean things without thinking about what he's saying. Kyo is also really competitive with Yuki. He will get in a fist fight or argument, but Yuki always beats him or has a comeback. He even has to live with Yuki. Both of them have a crush on their housekeeper, Tohru, which leads to a lot of problems in their house.

Status: Tohru's Friend
Story: Arisa Uotani has a rough past, but then meets Tohru Honda and her mother. She looks up to Tohru's mother and admires her greatly. After Tohru's mother dies, she begins to look out for Tohru, and whenever someone bothers her, she sticks up for her. Uotani is a tomboy girl and has the nickname "Yankee", which is Japanese slang for 'female gangster' (which she was before she met Tohru). Yankees wear long skirts, dye their hair, and use eyeliner to make their eyebrows more noticeable.

Story: Hana is a very scary character in Fruits Basket. She is somewhat psychic, and is always sneaking up on people. She is always willing to do anything to make Tohru happy. Like Arisa, she wishes to return the favor of friendship to Tohru for being her first real friend.

Story: When we first meet Kagura, she's shy and quiet. And when she sees her childhood love, Kyo, she is moved to tears! "Kyo! Kyo!" she calls out to him. She's a dedicated girlfriend and loves Kyo much! But there's a slight problem... she shows her love in very violent ways! Whenever Kagura shows up, Kyo is petrified and tries to run away, from her kicks, punches, and concussions of love!

Story: Momiji likes Tohru when he first meets her. He is the younger cousin of Yuki, Kyo, and Shigure. He takes Tohru to a hot spring in return for Valentine's chocolates. Although Momiji acts kind, he has a terrible secret about his mother. He vows that he'll always keep all of his memories no matter how bad or good, because he knows that someday, he'll be able to overlook the pain and be able to remember.

Story: Hatori is the kind of guy who usually likes to look responsible and professional. He can barely see out of his left eye, because Akito hurt it when Hatori wanted to get married. Hatori seems cold when you first meet him, but you will eventually understand that he's not, and the reason he acts as such. When someone finds out about the zodiac curse, Hatori is the one responsible for the erasing of their memories.

Alias: Haru Sohma

Story: Hatsuharu Sohma is one of the most interesting characters in Fruits Basket. Whenever he embraces a person of the opposite gender, he turns into a cow. Haru has developed a split personality. The good side of him is "White Haru", the calmer, kinder, lazier, and less arrogant side. The bad side is "Black Haru", who is arrogant, rude, and rather violent. Even the smallest problem can trigger his black personality.

Story: Ayame is Yuki's older brother, but they are nothing alike. Ayame is much louder than Yuki, not to mention much more sure of himself. He is under the impression that he is the most charming person in the world. Ayame likes to dress up in women's clothing from time to time. His only intention is to bond with Yuki (no matter how much it might seem like he only wants to piss everyone off).

Story: Ritsu was born with the curse of the sign of the monkey. As far back as he could remember, his parents always had to apologize for everything he did, so he is very unsure of himself. He feels that every day, he is robbing the world of its air by breathing. He found that it always made him feel more comfortable to dress like a girl, but that only gave his parents even more to apologize for. With the help of Tohru, he decides to live on, so that he may one day find out what the purpose of his life is. He also inspires to be like his idol, Ayame.

Story: Kisa was picked on at school, so for a while she wouldn't talk to anyone. Then she ran away and wouldn't stop biting Tohru at first. Then she found out that Tohru understood what she was going through and she now follows Tohru everywhere.

Story: Hiro is the only zodiac member that does not like Tohru at all. He is Kisa's best friend and he has a crush on her. But he feels guilty that he couldn't protect Kisa against her school bullies or Akito. And he takes his guilt out on poor Tohru.

Story: Akito Sohma is the leader of the Sohma family. It is only after assurance from Shigure that Tohru can be trusted with the family secret that she is allowed to stay. Most of the Sohma family is afraid of Akito and will follow his orders no matter what their personal feelings may be. Akito is a cruel person who doesn't care for anyone else. He gets sick very often and is watched over by Hatori Sohma, who is a doctor for the family.

Story: He's the last member of the Sohma family to be introduced. Kureno is kept under lock and key by Akito and caters to Akito's every whim, with hardly any freedom. But in his brief escape from Akito, Kureno discovers Tohru's bestfriend Arisa "Uo", and they start a romance together. But since their first meeting, they haven't seen each other again...

Story: She is the strong-willed ex-girlfriend of Hatsuharu! She has earned the wrath of Akito, when Haru and her went public with their relationship. She may seem aloof but, deep down inside, she is yearning to be able to love and trust again. The search for a cure to the Sohma family curse has bought up some painful memories, Akito's punishment and when her parents turned against her

- Prince Yuki Fanclub -

Status: Annoying
Story: They are the Prince Yuki Fanclub members. These three, along with many other girls, are obsessed with Yuki and have a club based around that obsession. They're highly organized and highly annoying, with their cheers and plots, in an attemp to get close to Yuki. They're also jealous of Tohru for "keeping the Prince to herself". But they can't do anything to Tohru, unless they want to face Hana and her electric shocks!

- Kyoko Honda -

Status: Tohru's Mother
Story: Kyoko was an devoted mother to Tohru and, even though she has died, she still remains a part of her life. Whenever Tohru is afraid or trying to figure out problems, Kyoko comes to her with wisdom.

- Mii -

Status: Shigure's Editor
Story: She must have the worst job in the world, next to changing a monkey's diapers and test-tasting motor oil! It is Mii job to edit and get Shigure's work to the press, by certain deadlines. BUT, Shigure finds it more fun to play pranks on her or make it seem he hasn't finished his work by the deadline. She's often seen, wondering around the Sohma house, looking as if she may hang herself... Poor Mii!
